
We are delighted to share news that Professor Peter Flatt, esteemed member of Dia Beta Lab’s Scientific committee, has been awarded an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List, recognising an extraordinary career spanning more than four decades in diabetes research.
Professor Flatt is a world-leading expert in regulatory peptides, glucoregulatory therapeutics, and experimental diabetes, with pioneering discoveries that have significantly advanced scientific understanding and clinical approaches towards the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
With over 538 peer-reviewed publications, a citation count exceeding 28,000, and an h-index of 79, Professor Flatt’s impact on the field is both deep and far-reaching. Through founding of the Diabetes Research Group at Ulster University, he has supervised over 100 PhD students, many of whom have become leaders in academia, including 13 university lecturers, 5 senior lecturers/readers, and 9 full professors.
His contributions have been recognised through numerous accolades, including election to the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) (2006), the Dorothy Hodgkin Lecture (Diabetes UK, 2007), and the award of a DSc degree (2018). He has also played a pivotal role in fostering international collaboration through leadership roles in Diabetes UK, European Association for the Study of Diabetes e.V. (EASD), and the formation of key Islet Study Groups and global research networks.
